Singapore-Malaysia Trip April 2024

Donna & I embarked on a “Gate 1” journey of discovery as we traversed continents and cultures, beginning with a flight from El Paso to Los Angeles, then on to the vibrant city of San Francisco before soaring across the Pacific on a 17-hour voyage with Singapore Airlines to the dazzling metropolis of Singapore. A city of soaring skyscrapers and cosmopolitan flair, Singapore welcomed us with open arms, boasting a tapestry of Chinese, Malay, and Indian influences woven into its vibrant cultural fabric.

In the heart of this bustling city-state, we met our guide, Dora Lim, and our fellow travelers, 24 strong. Our days were filled with wonder as we immerse ourselves in Singapore’s iconic landmarks—the ethereal Gardens by the Bay, the majestic Marina Bay Sands, and the enchanting Merlion Park, to name but a few.

But our adventure knew no bounds as we bid farewell to Singapore’s shimmering skyline and ventured into the embrace of Malaysia, a land of contrasts where modernity harmonizes with tradition. From the UNESCO heritage town of Malaka to the famous Hindu shrine at Batu Caves, onto the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia captivated us with its blend of ancient charm and cutting-edge innovation.

In the heart of Kuala Lumpur, we stood in awe before the iconic Petronas Towers, delved into the nation’s rich history at the National Museum, and witnessed the artistry of pewter craftsmanship at the Royal Pewter Factory. Each day unfolded like a chapter in a gripping tale, with our intrepid guide, Dora, leading the way with unparalleled expertise and warmth.

As we traversed the Malaysian landscape, from the misty heights of the Cameron Highlands to the storied streets of historic Georgetown, we were reminded of the resilience and vitality of this remarkable nation. Despite the tropical heat and occasional downpours, our spirits remain undaunted, fueled by the camaraderie of our fellow travelers and the boundless wonders that awaited us around every corner.

Japan/South Korea – Diamond Princess Cruise Ship – Nov. 2023

Donna and I, accompanied by our friends Doug and Sally Borrett, embarked on a memorable journey to Tokyo, Japan, where we boarded the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship for a captivating 13-day tour around Japan. and one day stop in Busan, South Korea. Our initial destination was Aomori, where we explored the enchanting Nebuta Festival Museum, showcasing dazzling floats synonymous with the renowned Nebuta Festival—an iconic summer celebration in Aomori featuring vibrant illuminated floats parading through the streets. Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse offered us an immersive experience, delving into the rich traditions of the festival. Our travel itinerary also featured noteworthy stops, such as the renowned Hara Model Railroad Museum in Yokohama, visits to World War II memorials in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Kobe Herb Garden and Ropeway, and the Earthquake Museum. The cruise extended to Busan, South Korea, where we strolled along the skywalk and visited the UN Cemetery. The Diamond Princess, a Medallion-class cruise ship, pampered us with exceptional cuisine, premium drinks, delectable desserts, and outstanding accommodations. We engaged in daily trivia sessions at 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, relishing the experience despite our less-than-stellar performance with the answers. This was our 2nd cruise with our friends Doug & Sally and we look forward to the next one in 2025.

Our second Adventures Abroad trip led us to the legendary and adventurous land of Mongolia. In the vibrant capital city, Ulaanbaatar, we met our group of 11 fellow travelers, ready to embark on an enthralling journey. With AA (Adventures Abroad) guiding us, we experienced the mesmerizing essence of Mongolia. Our itinerary included visits to museums, temples, national parks, monasteries, and even the vibrant Naadam festival. However, the highlight of our expedition was undoubtedly the vast and awe-inspiring Gobi Desert. For 5 days, we immersed ourselves in this remote and arid landscape, camping under the stars for five nights in three different Gers. The Gobi Desert captivated us with its boundless expanse and stark beauty, boasting majestic sand dunes, rugged mountains, and unique rock formations. We engaged in archery target shooting, glimpsed nomadic herders living in harmony with the challenging environment, and gained profound insights into their fascinating way of life. From exhilarating rides on Bactrian camels through the shifting sands to discovering ancient petroglyphs, the Gobi Desert provided an exceptional blend of natural wonders and cultural encounters. As the sun gracefully set, painting the sky with hues of red and orange, we felt an undeniable connection to the untamed spirit of Mongolia’s enchanting Gobi Desert. This adventure will forever remain etched in our memories as an unforgettable exploration of a truly remarkable destination.

Nepal/Bhutan Trip – April 2023

Donna and I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Nepal and Bhutan alongside a Gate 1 tour group of 15. Our journey began with a flight from JFK to Doha, Qatar, and then to Kathmandu, where we were greeted by our tour guide Avash and the other members of our group. Our itinerary included some incredible highlights such as visiting the ancient palace of Hanuman Dhoka and the Temple of Kumari in Kathmandu’s Durbar Square, exploring the Buddhist Stupa of Swayambhunath – a designated World Heritage Site, and experiencing the medieval city of Bhaktapur, known as the “City of Devotees,” which dates back to the 13th century.

Additionally, we embarked on a spiritual journey to the world-famous Hindu shrine of Pashupatinath, spent three days at a Jungle Resort in Chitwan National Park, toured the Pokhara Valley, and visited the ancient city of Patan – a square filled with Hindu temples and Buddhist monuments. In Bhutan, we were in awe of the extraordinary scenery and striking monasteries, visited Thimphu – a blend of old and new, witnessed monks serenely strolling in their crimson robes, and joined Buddhists performing their daily rituals at the whitewashed National Memorial Chorten.

We also drove to Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan, pausing to view the astounding snow-clad peaks of Bhutan, visited Punakha Dzong – the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan with its towering, whitewashed walls, and hiked to the world-famous “Tiger’s Nest” on the face of a sheer cliff above the Paro Valley. Our group consisted of seasoned travelers who got along very well, making for a very enjoyable and educational trip.

Sri Lanka – January/February 2023

Sri Lanka Independence Day Parade – Feb. 4, 2023

Donna and I embarked on a Gate 1 journey to Sri Lanka, accompanied by a group of five other travelers. Our guide Richard led us on a tour of the majority of the island, including several notable attractions. One such highlight was the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sigiriya, which required a climb of 1200 steps to get to the top. We also explored Polonnaruwa, a variety of temples, and a botanical garden. During our trip, we even managed to spot a leopard in Yala National Park and engage in a discussion with a Buddhist Monk. Our tour concluded with a trip to Galle Fort and a visit to a turtle hatchery.

Southern India – January 2018

This is a trip that Donna & I took to the southern part of India. We flew into Chennai then traveled with our Gate 1 hosts through Puducherry, Madura and points south, then flew out of Kochin back home. The trip was interesting. We met some new friends, got to see parts of India that we hadn’t seen before, including temples, museums and national parks, and experience the culture and food of the area.

Japan/South Korea (ITHF) – May 2016

This was a tour we took with the Rotary International Travel & Hosting Fellowship (ITHF) which was planned by Steve & Noko Yoshida (members of the fellowship). It included much of the southern island of Japan as well as the southern part of South Korea. It was truly a trip to remember. The things we learned about the culture in both countries left an indelible impression on us. The people we met on the tour were wonderful travel companions and the job done by our hosts and guides was spectacular. The hotels we stayed at had top-of-the-line (first class) accommodations and we were delighted to have the opportunity to taste traditional Japanese & Korean cuisine.

Israel / Palestine / Jordan – February 2016

We toured the Holy Land, spending 7 days in Israel and 7 days in Jordan. It is one thing to study the Bible when you are 7,000 miles away, but it is a completely different – some say life-changing – experience doing it while in the Holy Land.  It is only in Israel and Jordan that the Bible truly comes to life. Another reason we visited this area was to combat the “fearmongering” which the media are constantly blasting us with on TV and in the newspaper. We were completely safe every day and everywhere we went. Education is the key to understanding. We had incredible tour guides who instilled in us the history and current political environment of these countries; we were able to visit several UNESCO World Heritage sites and, of course, Petra, one of the “Seven Wonders of the World.”

Thailand/Cambodia (ITHF) – May 2012

This trip was made in conjunction with the 2012-2013 Rotary International Convention in Bangkok. Donna & I spent the first 3 days visiting Cambodia, then went onto Bangkok. The balance of the trip was spent in northern Thailand with the Rotary ITHF (International Travel & Hosting Fellowship.) The last three days of the trip we flew to Phuket, one of the most picturesque group of islands in the world.

Northern India – October 2008

We took this trip with Gate1 Travel. Going to India is a trip beyond your wildest imagination. It’s an assault on your senses. There is so much poverty and a totally different culture than in the US. We enjoyed the Taj Mahal, taking a boat ride on the Ganges River, visiting all the temples, riding an elephant, and meeting the people. It was an experience of a lifetime.
