Donna and I spent nearly two weeks exploring Portugal on a Gate 1 Travel tour that took us from the historic city of Porto in the north to the vibrant capital of Lisbon. Along the way we experienced medieval towns, breathtaking mountain scenery, world-famous wine regions, dramatic Atlantic coastlines, and the warm hospitality that Portugal is known for. The tour combined guided sightseeing with plenty of opportunities to explore on our own, making it an excellent introduction to one of Europe’s most beautiful countries.
Our adventure began in Porto, where we had time to wander the city’s colorful streets before meeting our fellow travelers and our outstanding tour director, Rui. Porto quickly impressed us with its historic architecture, beautiful churches, and lively atmosphere. We visited Guimarães, considered the birthplace of Portugal, where we toured its medieval castle and charming town square. Back in Porto we admired the famous São Bento Railway Station, toured the magnificent Stock Exchange Palace, sampled locally produced olive oils and Vinho Verde wine, and visited what is often called one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores. |
From Porto we entered the spectacular Douro Valley, one of the world’s oldest wine-producing regions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We visited historic churches and monasteries, sampled traditional Portuguese pastries, toured several family-owned wineries, and enjoyed outstanding wine tastings. A relaxing cruise on the Douro River offered magnificent views of steep terraced vineyards that have produced Portugal’s famous port wines for centuries. We also toured the elegant Mateus Palace and the informative Douro Museum, gaining a deeper appreciation for the history and culture of this remarkable region.
Continuing south, we visited the historic city of Viseu before enjoying a cooking demonstration at a local farm, where we learned more about traditional Portuguese cuisine. In the Serra da Estrela region we explored the medieval town of Belmonte, visited the renowned Real Alter Stud Farm with its beautiful Lusitano horses, and toured the impressive Portalegre Tapestry Museum. One memorable lunch introduced us to regional specialties, including dogfish soup and lamb stew, while another featured the warm hospitality of a Portuguese family who welcomed us into their home.
One of the highlights of the journey was exploring Évora, where ancient Roman ruins, narrow streets, and the fascinating Chapel of Bones offered a glimpse into Portugal’s rich and sometimes unusual history. We also enjoyed browsing local cork shops before continuing south into the Algarve, Portugal’s spectacular coastal region.
Lagos proved to be one of our favorite destinations. We visited Cabo de São Vicente, the southwestern-most point of mainland Europe, where towering cliffs overlook the Atlantic Ocean. We also explored the historic Fort of Sagres, closely associated with Prince Henry the Navigator and Portugal’s Age of Discovery. The true highlight of the Algarve was an exciting speedboat ride through the famous sea caves and grottos along the coast near Ponta da Piedade. The towering limestone cliffs, hidden beaches, arches, and crystal-clear water created some of the most beautiful scenery of the entire trip and provided countless opportunities for memorable photographs.
Our final destination was Lisbon, Portugal’s capital. Along the way we stopped at several important monuments before enjoying a traditional Portuguese Fado dinner accompanied by talented local musicians. The emotional music and intimate setting provided a wonderful introduction to Portugal’s cultural heritage. The following day we visited the fairy-tale town of Sintra, with its magnificent palace and picturesque streets, before gathering one last time with our traveling companions for a farewell dinner.
Throughout the tour we enjoyed traveling with a friendly group of fellow travelers from across the United States, and Rui’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and sense of humor made every day enjoyable. From historic castles and ancient cathedrals to world-class wineries, coastal cliffs, and welcoming local families, Portugal exceeded our expectations at every turn. It was a journey filled with unforgettable scenery, delicious food, fascinating history, and lasting memories that Donna and I will treasure for many years to come.
